  11.                         INDIZONE2 CONTEST RESULTS!

  13. Background: In October of 1993, Silicon Graphics announced the second
  14. IndiZone Games Contest in which customers worldwide could write code and
  15. compete to win an SGI workstation in one of several categories.  The 
  16. categories were:
  17.  
  18.         Best Indy Software
  19.         Single User Games
  20.         Multiple User Games
  21.         Single User Tools
  22.         Multiple User Tools
  23.  
  24. Code was due in by January 21, 1994.  Judging took place March 17 and 18,
  25. 1994.  And the winners of the categories were:
  26.  
  27. Single User Games:      Blix, by Frans Van Hoesel (Xtreme Software, Netherlands)
  28.                         Blix features a small mouse and a number of enemies...
  29.                         ants, flying fish, and skeletons...who appear out of
  30.                         elevators located at various locations in a maze
  31.                         situated on a sphere.  To win, the mouse must blow up
  32.                         all the elevators without being exterminated.

  34. Multiple User Games:    Cycles, by Robin Humble (Monash Univ., Australia)
  35.                         Cycles features three levels in which players race
  36.                         small ATV-like cycles that leave solid walls behind
  37.                         them.  If a player strikes a wall, they lose.

  39. Single User Tools:      Acal, by Steve Whitney (Silicon Graphics, Mt. View)
  40.                         Acal is a calender and day-planning tool which permits
  41.                         the user to set various alarms to alert the user to 
  42.                         upcoming events.

  44. Multiple User Tools:    No entries; no prize awarded.
  45.  
  46. Best Indy Software:     Gold, by Peter Broadwell (3DO Software, USA)
  47.                         Gold is an interactive program in which you can
  48.                         manipulate an aquarium full of goldfish.  You can
  49.                         change their physical characteristics, feeding 
  50.                         behaviour, and breeding patterns and breed more
  51.                         goldfish.

  54. Statistics:  Entry cards were mailed out to approximately 400 potential 
  55. contestants.  By the deadline, 134 entry cards had been received.  Of the
  56. 134 registered contestants, 24 contestants submitted final code, which broke
  57. down into the following categories:

  59. Single User Games:      9
  60. Multiple User Games:    8
  61. Single User Tools:      5
  62. Multiple User Tools:    0
  63. Best Indy Software:     2
  64.  
  65. The winning submissions, plus the majority of the entries, will be included
  66. on a CD to be titled, "IndiZone2".  This CD will be available with all new
  67. desktop systems, and will start shipping later this year.
