- INDIZONE2 CONTEST RESULTS!

- Background: In October of 1993, Silicon Graphics announced the second
- IndiZone Games Contest in which customers worldwide could write code and
- compete to win an SGI workstation in one of several categories. The
- categories were:

- Best Indy Software
- Single User Games
- Multiple User Games
- Single User Tools
- Multiple User Tools

- Code was due in by January 21, 1994. Judging took place March 17 and 18,
- 1994. And the winners of the categories were:

- Single User Games: Blix, by Frans Van Hoesel (Xtreme Software, Netherlands)
- Blix features a small mouse and a number of enemies...
- ants, flying fish, and skeletons...who appear out of
- elevators located at various locations in a maze
- situated on a sphere. To win, the mouse must blow up
- all the elevators without being exterminated.

- Multiple User Games: Cycles, by Robin Humble (Monash Univ., Australia)
- Cycles features three levels in which players race
- small ATV-like cycles that leave solid walls behind
- them. If a player strikes a wall, they lose.

- Single User Tools: Acal, by Steve Whitney (Silicon Graphics, Mt. View)
- Acal is a calender and day-planning tool which permits
- the user to set various alarms to alert the user to
- upcoming events.

- Multiple User Tools: No entries; no prize awarded.

- Best Indy Software: Gold, by Peter Broadwell (3DO Software, USA)
- Gold is an interactive program in which you can
- manipulate an aquarium full of goldfish. You can
- change their physical characteristics, feeding
- behaviour, and breeding patterns and breed more
- goldfish.

- Statistics: Entry cards were mailed out to approximately 400 potential
- contestants. By the deadline, 134 entry cards had been received. Of the
- 134 registered contestants, 24 contestants submitted final code, which broke
- down into the following categories:

- Single User Games: 9
- Multiple User Games: 8
- Single User Tools: 5
- Multiple User Tools: 0
- Best Indy Software: 2

- The winning submissions, plus the majority of the entries, will be included
- on a CD to be titled, "IndiZone2". This CD will be available with all new
- desktop systems, and will start shipping later this year.
